Marquette, Michigan – Rough waves and dangerous currents are slamming Michigan’s Lake Superior shoreline today, prompting urgent safety warnings across Marquette and Alger counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday, with life-threatening swimming conditions due to strong rip currents and high wave action. Popular locations like Middle Bay and Little Presque Isle in Marquette County, along with Grand Marais Harbor and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Alger County, are especially dangerous.

Residents and tourists are urged to stay out of the water today and remain cautious into Friday, when a renewed high swim risk is possible. While skies gradually clear and temperatures climb into the low 50s Friday, frigid water and strong surf still pose serious threats.

Looking ahead, Memorial Day Weekend will bring sunshine and warmer temps. Highs will rise to 56°F Sunday and 58°F Monday, making beaches tempting—but hazardous conditions may persist. Be sure to check surf conditions before heading out.

Here’s your five-day outlook:

  • Friday: Cloudy, highs near 46°F. Slight chance of showers before 8 p.m.
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny, highs near 51°F.
  • Sunday: Partly cloudy and warmer, high of 56°F.
  • Memorial Day (Monday): Mostly sunny and mild, high near 58°F.
  • Tuesday: Sunny skies continue, high of 60°F.

🌊 Reminder: Stay informed with local alerts and avoid swimming in rough water. Another Beach Hazards Statement could be issued if wave conditions remain dangerous into the weekend.
