Michigan City, IN – All westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road were shut down Sunday night after a FedEx Ground semi truck overturned near mile marker 45, according to the Indiana State Police Lowell Post. The crash occurred approximately six miles east of the Michigan City exit, prompting a swift emergency response and significant traffic delays.

Troopers arriving at the scene found the semi on its side across the westbound lanes, with the truck’s cab off the roadway and into the grass. Photos released by authorities show extensive damage to the trailer and debris scattered across the shoulder. Fire crews and tow operators were dispatched to assist with roadway safety, leak control, and clearing the overturned vehicle.

Police did not immediately disclose whether the driver sustained injuries, though responders were seen evaluating the cab area. Westbound traffic was brought to a complete stop as troopers secured the crash scene and began their investigation.

The cause of the rollover has not yet been determined. Wet pavement, speed, or load shift remain possible factors, though Indiana State Police say a full investigation is underway.

Drivers traveling westbound on I-90 were urged to use alternate routes, including U.S. 20 or I-94, to avoid extended delays. The closure is expected to last several hours as crews work to upright the semi, remove damaged equipment, and clear the roadway.

Motorists in the region should continue to monitor travel alerts and traffic updates as cleanup operations progress.

The Indiana Toll Road is a major freight and commuter corridor, and officials note that crashes of this nature can have widespread travel impacts during overnight and early-morning hours.
