Berlin Township, MI – A 27-year-old man and two children were hospitalized after their vehicle caught fire in Berlin Township on Thursday evening. The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle fire on South State Road, near Bennett Road, at 7:31 p.m.
According to Ionia County Central Dispatch, the car left the roadway, crashed into a tree, and erupted into flames. Reports indicated that the vehicle was occupied, and the passengers were trapped inside.
Bystanders acted quickly, approaching the burning vehicle and opening the door to allow the occupants to escape. Deputies identified the vehicle as a 2012 Subaru Impreza, severely damaged by the fire. The driver, a man from Orange Township, and two children, ages 3 and 9, were taken to a Grand Rapids hospital.
The children received medical attention as a precaution. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The Ionia Department of Public Safety, Michigan State Police, and local fire departments assisted at the scene.
