St. Clair Shores, MI – A Saturday afternoon boating accident in Macomb County left two people injured and a dog dead after a vessel exploded shortly after leaving a fuel dock at the Emerald City Harbor in St. Clair Shores.

According to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the harbor at about 12:35 p.m. after reports of an explosion involving a recreational vessel. Video footage reviewed by investigators shows the boat, carrying two individuals and one canine, fueling at the dock before pulling away. Seconds later, the boat exploded.

Witnesses jumped in to assist the two individuals, who were thrown into the water. The St. Clair Shores Police Department and St. Clair Shores Fire Department also responded. Authorities said both individuals sustained minor injuries, while the dog was taken to an emergency veterinary hospital. The canine later died from its injuries.

When deputies arrived, the vessel was nearly submerged with debris scattered across the water. Officials confirmed the boat was no longer on fire but noted that fuel and oil had leaked into the lake, prompting environmental crews to assist with cleanup efforts.

The fuel dock also sustained damage from the blast, though no other boats or individuals at the marina were reported injured. Investigators said foul play is not suspected at this time, but the case remains under investigation.

Authorities have not released the identities of those involved.
