Marquette, MI – A blizzard warning has been issued for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, with hazardous conditions expected from Thursday morning through early Friday. High winds and heavy snow will create dangerous whiteout conditions, making travel extremely difficult.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, blizzard conditions will impact Keweenaw, Houghton, Ontonagon, and Baraga counties starting late Thursday morning. Snow accumulations between 2 to 6 inches are expected, with winds gusting up to 55 mph. The storm will intensify in the afternoon, bringing lake-effect snow and strong winds that could lead to power outages and tree damage.
The worst conditions are expected during the Thursday evening commute, with slippery roads and near-zero visibility. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is essential, officials recommend carrying a winter survival kit and staying with the vehicle if stranded.
Snowfall will taper off by early Friday, but strong winds may continue to cause blowing snow and hazardous driving conditions. Drivers are advised to check road conditions before heading out.
