Gaylord, MI – The Great Lakes region is bracing for a full-blown winter blast from November 28–30, as Arctic air surges across Michigan, triggering lake-effect snow and travel hazards through Black Friday weekend. The setup could bring heavy snow and near-whiteout conditions across northern and western parts of the state.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Gaylord and Marquette, MI, a moderate to high risk of heavy snow exists across northern Michigan, where cold, unstable air flowing over Lake Superior and Lake Michigan will ignite persistent snow bands. Totals of 8–14 inches are possible across the U.P. and northern Lower Peninsula, including Gaylord, Traverse City, and the Marquette area. Winds gusting 30–40 mph will cause blowing snow and drifts along exposed roads and open countryside.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, hazardous travel is expected along I-75, U.S. 131, and M-28 late Friday through Sunday. Visibility could drop below a quarter mile at times in stronger snow squalls. The coldest air of the season will follow, with highs in the 20s and wind chills in the single digits.

Motorists are urged to delay non-essential travel, carry blankets and extra supplies, and monitor updated advisories. Residents should also prepare for isolated power outages and protect pipes and pets from subfreezing temperatures.
