Grand Rapids, MI – The National Weather Service has issued a strong warning for swimmers along the Lake Michigan shoreline, urging the public to stay out of the water from Indiana Dunes through St. Joseph. Officials said dangerous conditions are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and continue into the night.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, northerly winds are forecasted to increase to 15 to 25 mph, building waves between 3 to 5 feet at beaches south of Grand Haven. The hazardous conditions will especially impact the north side of piers, including popular spots such as Holland State Park and North Beach in South Haven.

Officials emphasized that red-flag conditions are in effect, meaning swimming is strongly discouraged. The risk for rip currents and structural currents is expected to be highest between 4 p.m. Tuesday and early Wednesday morning. “Do Not Swim” alerts have been posted for beaches in Berrien, Van Buren, and Allegan counties, stretching from Indiana Dunes National Park through St. Joseph and up the lakeshore.

Yellow-flag conditions, indicating caution, are possible north of the warning zone where waves are expected to be slightly lower. However, beachgoers are still advised to stay dry when waves are high.

The NWS stressed that even experienced swimmers are at risk during red-flag conditions. High waves and strong currents can overwhelm swimmers quickly, especially near piers and breakwalls.

Beach visitors are urged to monitor conditions, follow lifeguard directions where available, and avoid entering the water until the advisory is lifted Wednesday.
