Manistique, Mich. – Swimmers along Schoolcraft County’s Lake Michigan shoreline face dangerous waves and rip currents through Tuesday evening, prompting officials to warn only experienced swimmers to enter the water.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Moderate Swim Risk is in effect today for beaches across southern Schoolcraft County, with especially hazardous conditions expected at Lakeview Park in Manistique and Seul Choix Point. Breaking waves and powerful nearshore currents may quickly exhaust even strong swimmers.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay clear of piers, break walls, and river outlets—areas where currents are typically strongest. Beachgoers should avoid entering the water unless they’re confident in their swimming abilities and remain vigilant near shore.

While the advisory is specific to Schoolcraft County, similar summer swim risks have occurred across the Upper Peninsula during periods of shifting winds and wave activity on Lake Michigan. These mid-July conditions are not uncommon, but can still prove dangerous without proper caution.

The swim risk remains in effect until tonight. Additional advisories could be issued if wave activity continues into Wednesday.
