Marquette, Mich. – Swimmers across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are being urged to stay out of the water Friday as dangerous waves and rip currents pose a moderate swim risk across beaches in Schoolcraft, Marquette, and Alger counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, hazardous conditions are expected throughout the day, especially at popular spots like Lakeview Park in Manistique, McCarty’s Cove in Marquette, and the exposed regions of Grand Marais Harbor. Breaking waves and unpredictable currents will make the shoreline particularly treacherous near piers, break walls, and river outlets.

In Schoolcraft County, Lakeview Park and Seul Choix Point are among the highest-risk locations. In Marquette and Alger Counties, unsafe waters are expected at Middle Bay, Au Train Bay, and along stretches of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, including Grand Sable Dunes and Miners Beach.

Only experienced swimmers should consider entering the water. Officials recommend avoiding these areas entirely, especially families with children or pets, and staying well clear of any water near structures or river mouths.

The swim risk is expected to persist into the evening. Additional alerts may be issued if wave conditions worsen.
