Gaylord, Mich. – Strong waves and dangerous rip currents are expected along the Lake Huron shoreline today, prompting officials to urge everyone in Alpena, Alcona, and Iosco counties to stay out of the water until at least 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from 8 a.m. through this evening, with waves reaching 3 to 5 feet and a high risk of powerful currents. The agency warns that strong rip currents could quickly pull swimmers into deeper water, and crashing surf could sweep people off piers and jetties along beaches including Starlite Beach, Harrisville State Park, and Oscoda Beach Park.

Local emergency managers recommend avoiding all swimming and water activities today, as even strong swimmers could be caught off guard. “Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions,” NWS Gaylord advises. In addition, stay off piers and breakwalls, and keep children and pets well away from the shoreline.

Beach hazard warnings like this are not unusual for the region in midsummer, especially when northeast winds pick up along Lake Huron. Previous incidents have led to injuries and water rescues, underscoring the need for caution.

Beach hazards are expected to ease tonight, but another statement could follow if winds persist.
