Manistique, Michigan – Life-threatening waves and powerful currents are expected along Schoolcraft County beaches Wednesday as gusty southerly winds sweep the Upper Peninsula, prompting urgent warnings for swimmers and beachgoers.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, the high swim risk will last throughout July 23, with Lakeview Park in Manistique and Seul Choix Point flagged as particularly hazardous. Officials urge residents and visitors to stay out of the water and keep clear of piers and break walls, where conditions can turn dangerous rapidly.

The risk is greatest where waves are high and currents strengthen near river mouths and man-made structures. Even strong swimmers could be swept offshore in these conditions. Local emergency managers stress the importance of heeding posted warnings and avoiding non-essential activities near the lake.

Residents should avoid swimming, stay back from the water’s edge, and keep children and pets away from risky areas. These conditions are not unusual for Lake Michigan in summer, but Wednesday’s winds are expected to make the threat especially severe.

The swim risk remains in effect through Wednesday evening, with further advisories possible if dangerous winds continue. Stay updated with local alerts before heading to the beach.
