MANISTIQUE, Mich. – Strong winds over Lake Michigan this afternoon are whipping up life-threatening waves and dangerous rip currents along southern Schoolcraft County beaches, prompting officials to urge swimmers to stay out of the water.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, the high swim risk will peak this afternoon, with particularly hazardous conditions at Lakeview Park in Manistique and Seul Choix Point. A short wave period is expected, meaning waves will break more frequently, quickly exhausting even strong swimmers.

Authorities warn residents and visitors to stay away from piers, break walls, and river mouths, where powerful currents and crashing waves increase the danger. The risk is expected to persist into the evening before winds ease.

Anyone visiting the shore should remain well back from the waterline and keep children supervised. Emergency crews caution that rescue attempts in such conditions are extremely dangerous for both the victim and the rescuer.

Beach hazards statements remain in effect for southern Schoolcraft County through tonight, with more advisories possible if winds pick up again later this week.
