Grand Rapids, Michigan – Powerful waves and strong currents are making Lake Michigan beaches north of Muskegon dangerous for swimmers through Wednesday, as winds up to 20 mph whip up waves as high as 5 feet. Red zones on the shoreline from Muskegon to Manistee mark the most hazardous spots for water activity, with beachgoers urged to stay out of the lake.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, dangerous conditions are expected to last all day Wednesday, July 23. “Do Not Swim” advisories are in place for areas where waves are predicted to exceed 4 feet, especially along the south sides of south piers in Grand Haven, Holland, and Ludington.

The National Weather Service map shows the highest risk along Manistee, Ludington, and Muskegon beaches, where powerful currents can quickly sweep swimmers away from shore. Yellow zones from Saugatuck to St. Joseph indicate moderate risk, but swimmers are still urged to use extreme caution and stay close to shore.

Officials warn that these waves and currents can overwhelm even experienced swimmers. Residents and visitors should avoid piers and breakwalls, monitor local beach flags, and never enter the water alone. Emergency managers stress that conditions may change quickly and could continue into Thursday if winds persist.

Stay tuned to the National Weather Service and local emergency alerts for updates, as advisories may extend beyond Wednesday if hazardous conditions remain.
