Monroe, MI – Authorities are continuing their search today for a Dearborn man who reportedly drowned in Lake Erie on Sunday evening after jumping from a boat near the Sandy Creek and Sterling State Park boat channel.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 5:49 p.m. Sunday reporting that a 23-year-old man had gone missing in the water. A rescue boat from the Frenchtown Township Fire Department located the vessel and safely escorted the remaining passengers to shore, but the missing man was not found.

The sheriff’s office identified the man as Hussein Afi Hassoun, 23, of Dearborn. Investigators said Hassoun and four other adults had been operating a 34-foot Baja boat when they decided to jump into the lake for a swim. Witnesses reported Hassoun began to struggle and disappeared underwater. Officials confirmed he was not wearing a life jacket.

Dive teams from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Southeast Michigan Dive Group began searching the lake using side-scan sonar but were forced to suspend operations at 11 p.m. Sunday due to unsafe wave conditions. Authorities said the search will resume this morning.

Multiple agencies are assisting in the search, including Frenchtown Township Fire Department, Monroe City Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Border Patrol, Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Downriver Mutual Aid, and Van Buren Township Dive Teams.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 734-243-7070.
