Midwest – Elevated fire weather conditions have been issued across the Midwest and Great Lakes regions today, October 6, 2024. A large upper-level trough has brought gusty northwesterly winds and low humidity to the area, raising concerns for potential wildfires.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), winds up to 15 mph and humidity levels between 20-30% will combine with dry fuels to create favorable conditions for fire spread. The most at-risk areas include parts of Lower Michigan, northern Ohio, and southeastern Michigan. These conditions are expected to persist through the afternoon and evening.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center expanded the fire weather alert slightly northward, encompassing more of Lower Michigan. Local residents are urged to remain cautious, particularly in outdoor areas where fire risks are elevated.
