Ann Arbor, MI – A large-scale active assailant response drill is scheduled for Tuesday in Ann Arbor, with Pioneer High School set to close its campus as local agencies conduct the training exercise.

According to the City of Ann Arbor, the drill will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, at Pioneer High School (601 W. Stadium Blvd.). The event will involve Ann Arbor Public Schools, local hospitals, police, fire, and EMS personnel. The school grounds will be closed to the public, and officials are urging residents to avoid the area and use alternate travel routes due to an expected increase in emergency vehicle activity.

“This exercise allows AAPS to work closely with local law enforcement and emergency responders to ensure we are fully prepared in the event of a real emergency,” said Liz Margolis, executive director of school safety and district operations for Ann Arbor Public Schools. “While we hope we never have to use these skills, preparation is key to protecting our school community.”

Officials say the drill is designed to test coordinated responses to potential active assailant threats. Participants will practice interagency communication, neutralizing threats, and managing the treatment and transport of simulated victims.

“This is vital training to ensure we are ready to respond quickly and effectively,” said Sydney Parmenter, emergency management coordinator for the City of Ann Arbor. “These exercises help identify areas for improvement and ensure seamless coordination between agencies.”

The drill is a training event only and not open to the public. For more details about emergency preparedness in Ann Arbor, residents can visit a2gov.org/emergency-management.
