South Bend, Indiana – Humid air and scattered thunderstorms are expected to return to the Michiana region Friday and Saturday, with heat index values climbing toward 100°F and the threat of severe weather including strong wind gusts.
According to the US National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, storm chances increase late Friday afternoon and continue into Saturday, bringing the potential for locally heavy rainfall and isolated thunderstorms with wind gusts reaching 40 mph or higher. Heat indices across northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan could spike between 93 and 100 degrees during peak afternoon hours.
Cities like South Bend, Elkhart, and La Porte may see showers develop as early as Friday evening, with the highest storm chances (60%) arriving Saturday. Windy conditions could impact outdoor events, while heavy downpours may cause brief flooding in low-lying areas or along busy routes like U.S. 30 and I-69.
Residents are advised to stay weather-aware, limit time outdoors during peak heat, and secure loose objects ahead of wind gusts. With high humidity and limited overnight cooling, those without air conditioning should seek cooling centers or public shelters if needed.
Storm chances decrease by Sunday night, but more unsettled weather could return next week. Warnings and heat advisories may be updated as conditions evolve.
