South Bend, IN – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for northern Indiana, southwest Michigan, and northwest Ohio through Sunday evening, as heavy snow and gusty winds continue to create hazardous travel conditions across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, snowfall totals will range from 6 to 12 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, particularly in lake effect snow bands extending inland from southern Lake Michigan. The heaviest accumulations are expected in LaPorte, Elkhart, Marshall, and St. Joseph counties, with additional snow through Sunday.
Elsewhere, areas including Fort Wayne, Huntington, Muncie, and Hillsdale will see 3 to 8 inches of snow, with gusts up to 30 mph reducing visibility and creating blowing and drifting snow. Travel may be very difficult to nearly impossible at times through Sunday afternoon.
Motorists are urged to delay travel if possible and to keep a winter safety kit in their vehicles, including flashlights, blankets, food, and water. For updated travel information, residents can dial 511 or check state road condition websites.
