South Bend, Indiana – Strong thunderstorms could quickly develop Tuesday afternoon, bringing hail and damaging winds that may impact the evening commute across Michiana.

According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, a slight risk (level 2 of 5) for severe storms is in place Tuesday for northern Indiana and southwest Michigan. Storms are expected to intensify after 3 p.m. and continue through the evening, with the highest impact zone centered around South Bend, Elkhart, and into Niles and St. Joseph, Michigan.

Key travel routes including the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90), US-31, and US-20 could see sudden downpours and reduced visibility during peak travel hours. Storms may produce hail up to 1 inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph, strong enough to knock down small branches and cause isolated power outages.

Cities like Mishawaka, Goshen, and Benton Harbor could also see strong storms, though coverage may vary by location. Brief heavy rain may lead to ponding on roads, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items before mid-afternoon and stay alert for warnings into the evening hours. Storms are expected to weaken late Tuesday night, but additional unsettled weather may develop into midweek.
