Miami, Florida – South Florida is staring down a double threat this weekend: dangerous heat and a renewed risk of afternoon thunderstorms starting Friday, August 15.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms begins Friday afternoon, mainly after 2 p.m. Highs will hover around 89°F, but heat index values could reach a sweltering 103°F, raising concerns for outdoor events, especially in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and surrounding metro areas. Winds from the east at 7 to 9 mph may offer slight relief, but conditions will remain oppressive.
Residents along I-95 and across downtown Miami should avoid non-essential afternoon travel, especially during peak storm hours between 2–6 p.m. Friday, when lightning and brief heavy downpours are most likely. Although recent showers have chipped away at the region’s drought, severe to extreme drought persists in the Everglades and coastal counties.
Thunderstorm chances remain elevated into Saturday (40%) and Sunday (30–40%), mainly in the afternoon hours. While mornings will start sunny and calm, each day could end with passing storms. Localized street flooding is possible, especially in low-lying neighborhoods.
More rain is needed to ease extreme drought, but the upcoming rounds will bring temporary relief at best.
