MIAMI, Fla. – Thunderstorms will expand across South Florida this afternoon, bringing a renewed threat for heavy rain and localized flooding along the Atlantic coast. Temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 80s before storms develop, with inland areas like Naples reaching near 90 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected from early afternoon into the evening hours, especially along the I-95 corridor through Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. The most intense cells could produce torrential downpours leading to ponding on roads and brief flooding in poor drainage zones.

Motorists are urged to slow down on wet roads and avoid driving through flooded intersections. Lightning strikes and gusty winds may also accompany stronger storms. The Florida Highway Patrol advises drivers to keep headlights on when rain reduces visibility.

Conditions should gradually improve late tonight, but lingering moisture will maintain a chance of additional showers into Friday. Outdoor plans, including after-school sports and evening commutes, could be disrupted by sudden rainfall bursts. Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and check for potential flood advisories through local emergency channels.

Warm, humid air will persist into the weekend, though rain coverage should decrease slightly by Saturday.
