Miami, Florida – Drivers along I-95 and the Florida Turnpike could face sudden downpours and wind gusts up to 50 mph by midafternoon Saturday as strong thunderstorms develop across South Florida.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, isolated to scattered storms are expected to intensify between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., primarily around the Lake Okeechobee region and along the east coast metro corridor. A few storms could become strong to marginally severe, capable of producing damaging wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph. There is also a low-end risk for isolated gusts exceeding 60 mph and small hail up to 1 inch in diameter.

Communities including Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach may see fast-moving cells capable of reducing visibility to under a mile during heavy rainfall. Ponding on roadways is possible, especially on I-95, I-595 and U.S. 1 during the late afternoon commute window.

Farther inland near Clewiston and along U.S. 27, stronger storm cores could bring brief hail and frequent lightning. Outdoor activities should be rescheduled or moved indoors as storms approach.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, monitor weather alerts and avoid flooded roadways. Conditions are expected to improve later this evening as storms shift offshore, but additional updates may be issued if stronger cells organize over the metro area before sunset Saturday.
