Miami, Florida – Increasing winds and rising seas are creating hazardous marine and beach conditions across South Florida today, impacting coastal travel and recreation.
According to the National Weather Service Miami, a cold front approaching the region is causing winds to strengthen rapidly, with wave heights building across Atlantic and Gulf waters. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for all local waters today and tonight, including areas near I-95, US-1, A1A, and US-41 corridors close to the coast.
Forecast conditions include wave heights of 6 to 10 feet and northwest winds of 20 to 30 knots, with gusts up to 35 knots. These conditions are expected to make boating dangerous, particularly for small vessels, and may lead to difficult navigation near inlets and coastal passes.
Beachgoers are also being urged to exercise caution. The National Weather Service reports a high risk of dangerous rip currents for Palm Beach and Collier County beaches. Strong rip currents combined with elevated surf are expected to produce hazardous swimming conditions throughout the day.
Officials warn that even experienced swimmers may struggle in these conditions, especially near jetties, piers, and areas adjacent to major roadways such as A1A in Broward and Palm Beach counties. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid entering the water when red flags are posted and to follow local beach safety guidance.
Commuters and workers traveling near coastal highways may notice blowing spray, rough surf, and limited marine visibility near bridges and causeways. The National Weather Service emphasizes that if conditions appear unsafe, it is best to postpone boating or swimming activities.
Conditions are expected to remain hazardous through tonight as the front moves through the region.
