Miami, Florida – Swimmers along South Florida’s Atlantic beaches face an immediate life-threatening risk as powerful rip currents intensify through Monday evening, driven by persistent onshore winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, a high rip current risk remains in effect for Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, with strong east winds sustaining 20 to 25 knots and higher gusts. These conditions are also triggering a Small Craft Advisory for Atlantic waters and Biscayne Bay, where hazardous seas are building.
Beachgoers in Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach are encountering rough surf with fast-moving currents capable of pulling even experienced swimmers away from shore within seconds. Lifeguards are urging the public to stay out of the water, especially near unguarded beaches. Red flags posted along the shore signal the highest level of danger.
Boaters are also dealing with choppy conditions, particularly offshore where wave action is strongest. Smaller vessels risk losing control in sustained winds and elevated seas.
Officials stress avoiding non-essential water activities, staying near lifeguard stations, and checking local advisories before heading out. These hazardous conditions are expected to persist through Monday evening, with additional alerts possible if winds remain elevated.
