Miami, FL – A High Rip Current Risk is in effect for Miami-Dade and Broward County beaches through Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Miami. The alert warns of dangerous rip currents capable of pulling swimmers away from shore, especially during periods of stronger onshore winds.
The advisory, which began Monday evening, affects popular beach destinations from Miami Beach to Fort Lauderdale, where breezy northeast winds are expected to persist through midweek. Gusts could reach up to 25 mph, increasing wave action and the risk of hazardous surf conditions.
According to the Weather Service, even strong swimmers can be swept into deeper water if caught in a rip current. Beachgoers are urged to swim near lifeguards, avoid swimming against the current, and float or tread water if caught until they can escape parallel to the shoreline.
The risk will remain elevated through Thursday night as steady winds and lingering surf conditions persist along the Atlantic coast. Officials advise checking local beach flags and advisories before entering the water and keeping a close eye on children and inexperienced swimmers.
