Miami, FL – Residents along Florida’s east coast should prepare for coastal flooding over the next several days as seasonal “King Tides” combine with breezy onshore winds, according to the National Weather Service in Miami.
The agency issued a coastal flooding advisory Thursday, warning that higher-than-normal tides may lead to saltwater flooding in low-lying neighborhoods, roadways, and marinas from Miami-Dade through Palm Beach County. Boaters and drivers are urged to take precautions as water levels rise.
According to NWS Miami, King Tides can occur 1.5 to 2 hours before and after the peak of high tide. This means flooding could affect both morning and evening commutes. Drivers are advised not to park or drive through saltwater, as it can permanently damage vehicles. Walking through floodwaters is also discouraged due to hidden hazards.
Boaters should be aware that King Tides often reduce clearance under bridges, making navigation more difficult. Additionally, officials recommend rinsing landscapes that encounter saltwater flooding to protect plants from fertilizer and pesticide damage.
While King Tides are a natural seasonal event, forecasters say the added breezy winds could worsen flooding conditions this week. Residents in coastal areas should monitor tide charts, avoid flooded roadways, and plan ahead for potential disruptions.
