Miami, Florida – Breezy onshore winds are creating a dangerous situation for beachgoers along Florida’s southeast coast today, with a high risk of rip currents threatening swimmers through 8 p.m. Thursday. Lifeguards and local officials are warning that strong currents can sweep even experienced swimmers far from shore, putting lives at risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, a “high” risk warning has been issued for all east coast beaches from Miami-Dade through Palm Beach County. The advisory is in effect until at least 8 p.m. this evening, with hazards likely to continue if winds remain elevated. Residents and visitors are urged to avoid swimming at unguarded beaches, and to stay alert for local warning flags and posted advisories.

Local agencies have already increased beach patrols in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, and red flags are flying at many popular spots, including South Beach and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Swimmers are encouraged to stay near lifeguards, never swim alone, and heed all posted warnings. Even strong swimmers should use extra caution, as rip currents can develop quickly.

If you must enter the water, make sure to check in with beach patrol first and have a flotation device handy. Officials also advise parents to closely supervise children and avoid deeper surf zones. Beachgoers are reminded that more advisories could follow if conditions remain hazardous into the weekend.

High rip current risk remains in effect for all southeast Florida beaches until 8 p.m. tonight. Further updates will be issued as necessary.
