Des Moines, IA – An EF-1 tornado swept through Polk County on July 15, 2024, causing significant disruption but fortunately no injuries or fatalities. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed the tornado struck between 5:37 and 5:47 PM CDT, cutting a path across Urbandale, Windsor Heights, and Des Moines.
According to the NWS, the tornado had estimated peak winds of 100-105 mph, with a path length of 7.23 miles and a maximum width of 300 yards. Despite the severity of the storm, there were no reported injuries or deaths, highlighting the effectiveness of early warnings and community preparedness.
Residents in the affected areas reported significant property damage, including downed trees and power lines. Cleanup efforts are underway, with local authorities coordinating with state emergency services to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
