Spokane, Washington – Scattered dry thunderstorms with lightning and erratic winds could spark new wildfires across north-central Washington Thursday afternoon, prompting a Fire Weather Watch for six high-risk zones from 1 to 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, fire-prone areas from the Methow Valley to the Colville Reservation and Lake Chelan could see thunderstorms capable of igniting fires in extremely dry brush. Lightning, paired with 30–50 mph wind gusts, may overwhelm initial response efforts and accelerate fire spread.
Communities in the Okanogan Highlands, North Cascades National Park, and Kettle Mountains are especially vulnerable, with fuels already primed from days of hot, dry weather. The risk is heightened by the potential for outflow winds to carry embers far beyond storm centers.
Residents should avoid outdoor burning, secure ignition sources, and remain alert to fast-changing fire conditions. Land managers may restrict recreational access if fire activity spikes.
This Fire Weather Watch may be upgraded to a Red Flag Warning if confidence in storm coverage increases. Updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
