Mesa, Ariz. – A flood watch is in effect Friday for Mesa and the Phoenix metro as strong thunderstorms move through the East Valley, bringing the potential for flash flooding and damaging winds. Some storms could turn severe, with rainfall amounts of up to half an inch possible in a short time.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, storms will build Friday afternoon with the highest risk between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Gusts could reach 20 mph as storms push across Maricopa County, with localized flooding possible along washes, low-lying roads, and intersections in Mesa, Chandler, and Gilbert.

Drivers should prepare for ponding on roads during the evening commute. Residents near normally dry washes are urged to avoid crossing flooded areas, as even a small amount of moving water can sweep away vehicles. Outdoor events in Mesa and Tempe could see delays or cancellations as storms develop.

Conditions improve by Saturday, with a 40% chance of lingering storms before skies clear into Sunday. Sunshine and highs in the low 90s return early next week, reducing flood concerns but keeping daytime heat in place.

The flood watch remains active through Friday evening, with updates expected as storms intensify.
