Merrillville, IN – The Merrillville Police Department has reported a significant increase in stray dogs found throughout the town.

According to a recent social media post by the department, the surge is believed to be due to dogs being abandoned by owners from neighboring cities.

The department urges residents to report any instances of dog dumping they witness, advising to note the vehicle’s license plate and description. The public is advised not to confront the individuals directly but to allow law enforcement to handle the situation, which could result in criminal charges and fines for the offenders.

This alarming trend highlights the ongoing issue of pet abandonment and the need for community awareness and action in addressing animal welfare.
