Merrillville, IN – Drivers in Merrillville should prepare for delays as a key stretch of Harrison Street has been shut down for several weeks due to roadwork.

According to the Merrillville Police Department, southbound Harrison Street between 61st Avenue and 62nd Place is closed for a water main replacement project. The closure began this week and is expected to last approximately four weeks.

Police said the southbound lane will remain fully closed for the duration of the project, with traffic detoured to alternate routes. Commuters are being urged to plan ahead, allow for additional travel time, and avoid the area if possible.

The closure affects a busy corridor near residential neighborhoods and local businesses in Lake County, raising concerns about potential congestion during peak morning and evening travel times.

Officials emphasized that the work is necessary to replace aging infrastructure and improve long-term water service reliability. “We encourage drivers to share this information with others who may be affected,” the department noted in its public advisory.

No specific reopening date has been set, but crews expect the project to wrap up by late October if work remains on schedule.
