Merrillville, IN – As temperatures drop across northwest Indiana, the Merrillville Fire Department is reminding residents to use space heaters safely, debunking several common heating myths that could lead to fires or injuries.

In a recent safety post, firefighters addressed three frequent misconceptions:

  • Myth: Space heaters are safe on any surface.
Fact: Always place heaters on a flat, hard surface—never on rugs, carpets, or furniture.
  • Myth: It’s fine to leave heaters running overnight.
Fact: Always turn them off before bed or leaving home.
  • Myth: Using an extension cord is safe.
Fact: Heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet to prevent overheating and electrical fires.

Officials also stress keeping heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including curtains, bedding, and furniture.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, space heaters account for nearly one-third of all home heating fires each year, with many incidents occurring overnight.

“Let’s keep our homes cozy and safe,” the department said in its message, encouraging residents to double-check heater placement and unplug units when not in use.
