Memphis, Tenn. – Extreme heat is gripping West Tennessee and parts of northern Mississippi today, with heat index values climbing to a life-threatening 116°F in Memphis and surrounding areas through Wednesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect area-wide. The most dangerous conditions are expected between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., with peak indices ranging from 113°F to 116°F across cities including Clarksdale, Union City, and Jackson.

Hourly heat maps show nearly every location exceeding 110°F by early afternoon. Memphis is forecast to hit 112°F by 2 p.m., while Jonesboro and Batesville will remain in the triple digits past 7 p.m. The NWS warns this type of heat can be fatal without proper precautions.

Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid strenuous activity during peak hours, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Wear lightweight clothing and hydrate frequently. Power grid stress and air conditioning demand may rise as temperatures remain elevated overnight.

The dangerous heat will persist into Wednesday, with no significant relief expected until late week. Additional advisories may follow depending on updated temperature trends.
