Memphis, TN – Western Tennessee faces another sweltering day Thursday as heat index values soar past 110°F across the region, prompting an Extreme Heat Warning from the National Weather Service through 8 p.m. Thursday.
According to the NWS Memphis office, actual high temperatures will climb into the upper 90s, with “feels-like” temperatures peaking between 107°F and 111°F across cities including Memphis, Jackson, Tupelo, and Oxford. The highest heat index—111°F—is expected in Memphis and Forrest City.
The warning area spans most of west Tennessee and north Mississippi, where conditions may lead to heat-related illness without proper hydration or cooling. Local officials urge residents to avoid outdoor activity between noon and 6 p.m., when the heat stress is most dangerous.
Children and pets should never be left in vehicles, even for a short time. Residents are advised to wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, stay in air-conditioned spaces, and take frequent breaks if outdoors. Power grid strain is possible, so limiting energy usage during peak hours is encouraged.
The extreme heat is forecast to ease slightly by Friday, but another advisory is possible if overnight temperatures remain high and humidity lingers.
