Memphis, Tennessee – Strong wind gusts could begin impacting travel and outdoor plans by early Thursday afternoon, with some areas seeing gusts over 40 mph and isolated severe storms developing through the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a cold front will move across the Mid-South Thursday, bringing a 70% to over 90% chance of wind gusts reaching at least 40 mph in parts of West Tennessee, eastern Arkansas, and the Missouri Bootheel. Sustained winds above 25 mph are also likely, especially north of I-40.
Storms are expected to develop between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., moving west to east. While coverage will be limited, any storm that strengthens could produce damaging wind gusts as the primary hazard. Secondary risks include hail up to one inch and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.
Cities including Memphis, Jackson, Dyersburg, and Jonesboro may see sudden wind shifts and brief heavy rain impacting roadways like I-40 and I-55.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and remain alert for warnings Thursday afternoon. Conditions will calm later Thursday night, but additional updates may follow as the system approaches.
