An arctic cold front moving into the Mid-South late Saturday will bring dangerously low wind chills into early Sunday, according to an evening update from the National Weather Service in Memphis. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight through 9 a.m. Sunday for wind chills expected to fall below 5 degrees, with portions of the Tennessee–Kentucky border region likely to experience readings below 0 degrees.
The Weather Service reported that temperatures will drop sharply behind the front, combined with increasing northwest winds. The resulting wind chills may lead to frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes. The advisory encourages residents to limit time outdoors, cover exposed skin and dress in lightweight, warm layers.
Forecast graphics released by the agency highlight widespread sub-5°F wind chills across western Tennessee, northern Mississippi and eastern Arkansas. Probabilities for sub-zero wind chills increase toward the Kentucky state line, where chances exceed 50 percent in several counties. Areas farther south, including Oxford and Clarksdale, still face a notable risk of wind chills near or slightly below 0 degrees.
The coldest period is expected between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Sunday, though the Weather Service notes that frigid conditions may linger into early Monday for northern sections of the region. Light winds later Sunday morning should gradually reduce the lowest values.
This cold surge follows a week of fluctuating temperatures across the Mid-South and arrives ahead of a quieter pattern early next week. Additional updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
