Memphis, Tennessee – Dangerous winter cold will grip Memphis and the Mid-South overnight, with wind chills dropping to zero or below from midnight through late Sunday morning. The cold snap arrives fast and carries real risks for anyone outdoors without protection.
The coldest period will stretch from the pre-dawn hours through mid-morning Sunday as brisk north winds combine with plunging temperatures. Wind chills around zero are expected across Shelby County, including Memphis, Germantown, Bartlett, Collierville, and Millington. Nearby areas of northeast Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel will feel similar conditions.
According to the National Weather Service office in Memphis, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight tonight to noon CST Sunday for much of West Tennessee, including Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, Haywood, Madison, and surrounding counties. Parts of north Mississippi, including DeSoto, Marshall, Tate, Union, Tippah, Alcorn, and Tishomingo counties, are also included. Additional advisories return Sunday night into early Monday for portions of north and central Mississippi as another surge of cold air arrives.
Travelers along I-40, I-55, I-240, and I-269 should prepare for bitter cold during overnight and early morning hours. According to emergency management officials, residents should limit time outdoors, wear layered clothing, hats, and gloves, and ensure pets are brought inside. Even brief exposure could lead to frostbite in these conditions.
Residents are also urged to protect exposed pipes, safely use space heaters, and check on elderly neighbors. Power demand will be high overnight, and staying prepared can reduce risk if brief outages occur.
Temperatures recover slightly Sunday afternoon, but cold air remains locked in through early next week across the Mid-South.
