MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A blanket of thick fog has settled across the Mid-South this morning, reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile in places. The city’s skyline is nearly hidden at dawn, and headlights cut only faintly through the gray air as traffic crawls along I-40 and I-55.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 8 AM CST Friday for areas of West Tennessee, North Mississippi, East Arkansas, and Southeast Missouri. Drivers are urged to slow down, use low beams, and allow extra distance for braking on slick roads. Visibility will gradually improve mid-morning as fog lifts, but light rain will persist into the afternoon.
Showers and a few isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop through midday before tapering Friday evening. Temperatures remain mild, near 74°F, before falling to the mid-60s Saturday as drier air returns. Sunshine is expected to dominate the weekend, offering ideal conditions for early holiday errands or outdoor cleanup ahead of Thanksgiving week.
Farther north, forecasters are tracking a developing cold pattern across the Plains and Midwest, where models hint at the potential for 3 to 6 inches of snow between November 25 and December 3. That system could send a surge of colder air southward early next week, bringing a more seasonable, crisp Thanksgiving to Tennessee and nearby states.
Travelers should plan for fog delays this morning and keep watch for early-week pattern changes that may affect cross-country Thanksgiving routes. By Sunday, bright skies and light winds will make for calmer, comfortable conditions across the Memphis area.
