Rain is expected to return to the Mid-South beginning Friday afternoon, with light rainfall continuing into early Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis.

In a forecast update posted Thursday evening, the National Weather Service said an area of low pressure will move through the region Friday, bringing increasing rain chances across west Tennessee, east Arkansas, and north Mississippi. Rainfall totals through Saturday are expected to range between one-quarter inch and one-half inch.

Forecasters noted that the overall thunderstorm threat remains limited. Portions of north Mississippi have a low chance, less than 30 percent, of thunderstorms Friday evening into early Saturday morning. Any storms that develop are expected to be isolated, with no widespread severe weather anticipated at this time.

Rain probabilities increase Friday afternoon and evening across much of the region. Memphis, Jackson, and Tupelo are forecast to see peak rain chances Friday night, while locations such as Oxford, Corinth, and Clarksdale also show elevated precipitation probabilities into the overnight hours. Rain chances gradually taper off by Saturday morning as the system moves east.

The National Weather Service emphasized that while rainfall amounts are not expected to be heavy, periods of steady rain could still lead to slick roads, particularly during Friday evening and overnight travel hours.

Commuters and late-shift workers may notice reduced visibility and wet road conditions during peak rain periods Friday night, especially along major highways and urban corridors.

Forecast details may continue to be refined as the system approaches, and residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts from the National Weather Service Memphis office.
