Memphis, TN – The US National Weather Service Memphis, Tennessee, has issued a weather alert for Memphis and surrounding areas due to a low-pressure system that will bring increasing rain chances this weekend. Widespread rain showers and a few thunderstorms are forecasted, with 1.5 to 2.5 inches of total rainfall accumulation expected by Sunday afternoon.

The rain will begin to increase on Saturday, with higher chances of precipitation later in the day, particularly along major roadways such as Interstate 40, Interstate 55, and U.S. Highway 64. The system will move eastward, affecting areas from Tupelo, Oxford, and Jonesboro to Tunica, Corinth, and Dyersburg. The heaviest rainfall, ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 inches, will be most likely in Memphis, Oxford, and areas north of Jackson, TN.

Travelers should prepare for slick roads and reduced visibility, particularly from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. Flooding may also be a concern, especially in low-lying areas and along waterways. Interstate 40 and U.S. Highway 61 will be impacted by heavy rain and possibly isolated thunderstorms, so those driving should allow extra time for travel.

While thunderstorms are possible, severe weather is not expected at this time, but gusty winds could accompany the storms. Areas further south, including Bolivar and Forrest City, may also see light to moderate rainfall, but the highest totals are expected across the Memphis metro area.
