Memphis, Tennessee – Chilly mornings are set to return to the Memphis area beginning Sunday, with temperatures dropping below freezing and even colder conditions expected by the end of the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, morning lows will fall below 32 degrees Sunday morning, marking the return of freezing temperatures across the Mid-South. Forecast lows for Memphis are expected to dip into the upper 20s, with similar conditions across surrounding communities in west Tennessee, north Mississippi, and eastern Arkansas.
Forecasters say temperatures will moderately rebound by midweek, with morning lows climbing back into the lower to mid-30s for Tuesday and Wednesday. However, the reprieve will be short-lived. Another cold front is expected later in the week, bringing a renewed surge of colder air that could push morning lows into the 20s by Thursday and Friday.
The NWS notes that while no significant winter precipitation is currently forecast with this cold pattern, the return of freezing temperatures could impact sensitive vegetation, exposed pipes, and pets, especially during the overnight and early morning hours. Residents are encouraged to take precautions ahead of the cold mornings, including protecting outdoor plumbing and bringing pets indoors.
Clear to partly cloudy skies are expected to accompany the colder temperatures, allowing overnight heat loss to intensify the chill. Winds are forecast to remain light, which may allow frost to develop in sheltered areas during the coldest mornings.
These conditions may be particularly relevant for early-morning commuters, students waiting at bus stops, and outdoor workers across the Memphis metro area.
The National Weather Service advises residents to continue monitoring forecasts as the late-week cold front approaches and temperature trends become more certain.
