Memphis, Tenn. — A brief return to springlike warmth will take hold across the Mid-South Friday afternoon, but residents and travelers should prepare for potential icy road conditions late tonight into Saturday morning as temperatures drop back toward freezing.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, southerly winds are drawing warmer and more humid air into the region, allowing afternoon highs to rise into the upper 50s and lower 60s. Some locations could briefly climb a degree or two higher than earlier forecasts, especially along and south of Interstate 40.
However, the warmth will be short-lived. As skies clear and winds relax tonight, temperatures are expected to fall to near or slightly below 32 degrees. Any snowmelt or lingering moisture on roadways could refreeze, creating slick and icy patches, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces.
Drivers traveling late tonight or early Saturday morning along I-40, I-55, U.S. 51, U.S. 61, and rural county roads should remain alert for black ice. These conditions may be most hazardous in low-lying areas and locations that received recent snowfall or melting earlier in the day.
Officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking during the early morning hours. Even brief freezing conditions can cause unexpected travel issues, especially before road crews have time to respond.
By Saturday mid-morning, temperatures are expected to rebound above freezing, reducing the icing threat. Despite the cold start, no additional wintry precipitation is forecast, and conditions should gradually improve through the day.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy Friday’s sunshine and warmth, but to plan ahead for a colder and potentially slick start to Saturday, particularly if traveling before sunrise. Stay tuned to local forecasts and road condition updates for the latest information.
