Memphis, Tenn. – Extreme heat is making a comeback across Tennessee, with temperatures expected to exceed 95°F daily through Friday, Sept. 19, raising concerns about fire danger and worsening drought.
According to the National Weather Service Memphis office, heat will intensify beginning Monday, with high temperatures peaking mid-week in areas like Jackson, Jonesboro, Memphis, and Tupelo. Humidity will stay low, which increases the potential for wildfires and aggravates already dry soil conditions across western Tennessee and northern Mississippi.
The combination of hot, dry air and ongoing drought is especially dangerous for counties under burn restrictions or experiencing moderate to severe drought. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents are urged to minimize ignition sources. Grass and brush fires could spread rapidly under these conditions.
Road crews and utility workers are also advised to monitor heat exposure, while vulnerable groups — especially the elderly and those without air conditioning — should take precautions to stay cool and hydrated.
Heat and dryness are forecast to persist through at least Friday evening, with the potential for extended advisories if temperatures remain high into the weekend.
