Tennessee starts the day under mild, almost springlike air, but the calm feel won’t last. Warmth and humidity continue to build across the Mid-South, setting the stage for a more active stretch of January weather.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, thunderstorm chances increase Thursday as a disturbance lifts out of the Ozarks. Most storms initially remain west of the Mississippi River, but a few could edge into the Memphis area by late Thursday, especially west of I-40. These storms are expected to be isolated, though some may turn strong.

By Friday, attention shifts squarely toward the Mid-South. A shifting jet stream is expected to steer the main storm track deeper into Tennessee, increasing coverage and intensity. Meteorologists note that areas near and south of the Mississippi River and south of I-40 face the greatest chance of storms Friday afternoon and evening.

Damaging wind gusts appear to be the primary threat both days. Heavy rain is also possible, which could lead to ponding on roads and brief visibility reductions during downpours. To be fair, not every location will see severe weather, but storms that develop could intensify quickly.

Drivers should plan for changing conditions late week. Wet pavement, gusty winds, and possible debris could complicate travel during peak hours. Secure loose outdoor items now and be ready to adjust plans if storms approach.

Confidence remains low to medium regarding exact timing and coverage, but the overall signal for late-week storms is strengthening. Additional updates are likely as models refine details.

January warmth may feel welcome, but it often comes with a tradeoff. This system is another reminder that severe weather can occur even during winter.
