Memphis, Tenn. – Drivers across the Mid-South have a narrow window late Thursday morning to secure vehicles and adjust travel plans as isolated severe storms threaten major corridors including I-40, I-55 and I-240 beginning around 11 a.m. The primary hazard is damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, strong enough to down tree limbs and create sudden lane blockages.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, thunderstorm coverage will increase late Thursday morning, especially south of the Tennessee-Mississippi state line. A more organized window for a few strong to severe storms is expected from late afternoon into early evening, roughly between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Storm motion will track northwest to southeast, placing areas along I-22, US-78 and I-269 at risk for fast-changing conditions.

Hail up to quarter size is possible in the strongest cells. While tornadoes are not expected and flooding is not the primary concern, brief torrential downpours could reduce visibility below one mile along elevated stretches of I-40, particularly near the Mississippi River bridge.

Motorists should avoid parking under trees, secure loose outdoor items and remain weather-aware if traveling during the afternoon commute. Charge devices and enable wireless emergency alerts in case warnings are issued.

Storm intensity will diminish after sunset, but additional updates could follow if storms strengthen or shift northward. The severe window remains open through early evening Thursday across the Memphis metro and northeast Mississippi.
