Memphis, Tennessee – Sporadic thunderstorms are moving through western Tennessee and northern Mississippi this afternoon, bringing brief bursts of gusty winds and small hail that could affect travel and outdoor plans into the early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, radar as of 2:40 p.m. CDT shows scattered storm cells primarily targeting cities like Jackson, Bolivar, and Oxford. The activity is expected to continue through at least 6 p.m., with diminishing coverage after sunset.

Drivers on I-40 and U.S. 51 may encounter rapidly changing road conditions, especially near heavier downpours between Memphis and Brownsville. Localized hail and 30+ mph wind gusts could also impact unprotected vehicles and outdoor setups across Tipton, Madison, and Lafayette counties.

Residents are urged to remain weather-aware through the afternoon and secure outdoor items that could be blown around by winds. While severe weather is not expected, lightning and isolated hail remain possible hazards.

Storm coverage should begin tapering off after sunset, with calmer skies expected overnight. However, additional updates may be issued if stronger cells develop.
