Memphis, TN – Residents across the Mid-South should prepare for a blustery Wednesday as gusty winds sweep through the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) Memphis reports that sustained winds between 15 to 20 mph will develop this morning and persist into the afternoon, with gusts occasionally reaching 35 to 40 mph.
The strongest winds are expected across northern Mississippi, western Tennessee, and eastern Arkansas, with the highest gust potential—up to 40 mph—near and north of Memphis. The NWS advises residents to secure outdoor items such as patio furniture, garbage bins, and holiday decorations, as unsecured objects could be blown around.
“These winds may not reach advisory levels, but they’ll be strong enough to cause some travel difficulties, especially for high-profile vehicles,” the NWS said in its Tuesday evening update. “Drivers on I-40, I-55, and other open roadways should keep both hands on the wheel and use extra caution.”
The gusty conditions are tied to a passing cold front, which will usher in cooler, drier air for the latter half of the week. Temperatures will remain mild Wednesday, topping out in the upper 50s to lower 60s, before dropping into the 40s overnight under mostly clear skies.
Winds will gradually diminish by late evening, setting up a calmer and cooler Thursday across the Mid-South.
