MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A bitter blast of cold air gripped the Mid-South early Monday, sending “feels-like” temperatures into the single digits and teens across the Memphis area and surrounding communities, according to the National Weather Service.

As of early Monday morning, wind chills were reported as low as 2 degrees in parts of southwest Tennessee, with much of the region ranging between 5 and 16 degrees. The coldest conditions were felt during the pre-dawn hours, prompting forecasters to urge residents to bundle up before heading outdoors.

Despite the frigid start, meteorologists say conditions will slowly improve through the day. Actual air temperatures are expected to edge above freezing by around midday Monday, offering some relief after the harsh morning cold. Sunshine is expected to help temperatures recover modestly, though it will remain chilly by seasonal standards.

The cold is the result of a recent surge of Arctic air pushing into the Mid-South, combined with light winds that amplified the chill during the early morning hours. While winds are not expected to be especially strong later in the day, lingering breezes may keep it feeling colder than thermometer readings suggest.

Officials recommend limiting prolonged outdoor exposure during the morning hours, especially for children, the elderly, and those without adequate cold-weather clothing. Pet owners are also encouraged to ensure animals have warm shelter, and residents should check on vulnerable neighbors.

Road conditions remain generally dry, but motorists are advised to remain alert for isolated slick spots on bridges and overpasses during the early commute.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to moderate gradually as the week progresses, bringing a return to more seasonable winter conditions. For now, forecasters say Monday will be the coldest day to start the week, with improvement expected later.
