Memphis, Tennessee – Memphis and surrounding areas are under an Extreme Heat Warning through 8 p.m. Wednesday, with heat index values soaring as high as 115° and widespread triple-digit readings from northeast Arkansas to north Mississippi.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the warning covers cities across East Arkansas, Southeast Missouri, North Mississippi, and West Tennessee—including Memphis, Jackson, Jonesboro, Tupelo, and Blytheville. Heat-related illnesses could spike as the heat index climbs above 110°, especially during peak afternoon hours both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Critical impact zones include Memphis, Bartlett, Southaven, Blytheville, Dyersburg, and Tupelo. Area road crews and first responders are urging everyone to limit outdoor activity, check on vulnerable neighbors, and never leave children or pets in vehicles, where temperatures can turn deadly within minutes. Power companies anticipate higher demand, so residents should charge devices and stay updated on possible outages.

Residents are advised to seek air-conditioned spaces, drink water frequently—even if not thirsty—and watch for signs of heat exhaustion such as dizziness or rapid heartbeat. Community cooling centers are open in Memphis, Jackson, and Tupelo. This prolonged heat event rivals some of the most dangerous stretches seen in recent summers.

The warning is expected to expire by 8 p.m. Wednesday, but further advisories are possible if conditions persist.
